Foscarini is founded on the island of Murano (Venice)

Foscarini was founded to produce lighting fixtures for the contract sector. On the Venetian island of Murano, in particular during the Seventies, a significant industry grew parallel to the traditional blown glass production, supplying custom contract work for large architectural projects. Foscarini combined the use of various blown glass techniques with a specific attention to the technical lighting characteristics. Glass, but conceived for lighting: a choice which carried precise implications for the design project, and was directed at building a product-oriented culture, in the best tradition of Italian design.Excerpt from the Foscarini monograph '83'03: Twenty years of lighting design.

The first catalogue collection of design lamps is born

Foscarini complemented its contract projects with a standardized production. The first phase of production conjugated two directions: on one hand the techniques for blowing Murano glass, on the other the attempt to make them dialogue with contemporary design culture. Fixtures in blown glass that made light, for which they conceived original solutions that often challenged the glassblowers and forced them into directions which were new to them. Lamps with clean and simple shapes, often distinguished by movement or mechanical solutions, which used glass for the quality of the material and its colors, attempting to go beyond a purely decorative configuration or surface treatment. First collaboration with external designers

In 1985, the standard production reached a twenty-percent share of Foscarini’s turnover and the first collection designed by independent designers was introduced. Adam D. Tihany and Joseph Mancini conceived Wassily off the Wall, inspired by the painterly world of Kandinsky and the ballet theatre of the Bauhaus.Illuminated objects rather than lamps, they were table and wall lamps produced by composing solid forms in primary colors, held together by polished metal mountings. New corporate structure

The acquisition of the company by Urbinati and Vecchiato led to a decisive turnaround in the strategies and business policies, including the use of independent designers for product and communication, and the relentless pursuit of an adequate production, distribution, commercial and service structure. New logo

Designer and art director from 1988 to 1993, Dordoni redesignes the Foscarini logo eliminating the explicit reference to Murano which before was linked to the logo. Renouncing the unequivocal identification with Venice was understood to be a necessary step towards building precise possibilities for further growth and development.

Orbital by Ferruccio Laviani

Foscarini did not abandon blown glass but became oriented, independently of the materials, towards an industrial design product where design experimentation was the focus of attention. Thus Orbital was an illuminated object rather than a fixture for lighting, with a strong graphic impact and bright colors, and a careful study of the metal details which were all “visible”. Orbital will then be included, as an example of new Italian design, among the objects consecrated by a series of stamps titled 'Italian Design,' issued by the Italian Postal Service in 2001.

Havana by Jozeph Forakis

Jozeph Forakis initially imagined Havana made out of glass with the profile of a cigar similar to the definitive one. Evaluations of the technical and economic feasibility of the fixture led to the exclusion of glass and the decision to use polyethylene for the shade. For the first time, with Havana, Foscarini produced a lamp made out of plastic, a lightweight, mobile lamp which emanates diffused light, sports a youthful image, economical costs, and would quickly become popular thanks to its flexibility and the ease with which it can be adapted to a variety of conditions and spatial contexts, in all its versions including the suspension and wall lamp. Havana is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

New materials: the company leaves Murano

Organizational and logistical decisions characterized the year 1993. In May the operative headquarters left Murano, where only the administration remained, moving to Marcon in the province of Venice, a more convenient location for logistics management. In 1994 the entire company move to the mainland.

Lightweight byTom Dixon

Tom Dixon created four different chandelier designs, reinterpreting the classical arm configuration and modularity of the Venetian models.One version reached a diameter of 120 cm, developing eight arms on its base and was constituted by approximately one hundred linear elements hand-soldered to compose a frame. This is the only piece still in production, in a polished gray zinc finish.

The road to quality

In 1996 Foscarini decided to pursue the UNI EN ISO 9001 certification by completing a process – which it had begun at the beginning of the decade with, for example, the activation of a claims monitoring procedure – aimed at achieving an overall quality system for the company, from the organisation of work to the control of final customer satisfaction. This move represented a decision to focus on a series of key issues for the company, though not entirely relevant yet to the final consumer, which would add new “qualities” to the creation of an industrial design company identity.

Dolmen by Ferruccio Laviani

Dolmen embodied Foscarini’s idea of a flexible lamp which could be adapted to many different types of use, especially in its original lean-on-the-wall configuration; an interesting and early approach towards the multi-functionality of the object, which has undoubtedly become one of the central issues of contemporary design. Just as significant was the return to the linguistic and visual spirit of the Sixties, which would arouse considerable interest.

Light fashion show

The image and communication strategy for the year 2000 was directed at the public and the general press, with a campaign organized by the Milan based agency Attila culminated with a “light fashion show”, an event held during Euroluce 2000.

Mite e Tite by Marc Sadler

Over two years of research was required to make Mite and Tite, lamps produced in the year 2000, with a body in woven glass fibre wrapped in carbon or kevlar® fiber thread. To produce a fixture which could adequately transmit the luminous flux, a suitable construction technology was found – rowing – and a mold and appropriate form were slowly perfected.

Caboche was a success from the get go, becoming one of Foscarini’s biggest best-sellers, and went on to become a genuine icon of designer lighting. Today, Caboche Plus constitutes an upgrade to the original design, developing its founding concepts, backed by new technologies and further steps towards simplification. An object with a strong visual impact, capable of combining light weight, decorative value and functionality.

An unmistakable sign in space, a marriage between Marc Sadler's eclectic creativity and Foscarini's research in the field of materials and technologies. Suspended on a flexible rod just like a fishing rod and adjustable with counterweights, the Twiggy floor lamp is a simple and genius idea, which has become an icon of designer arc lamps.

Foscarini renews its commitment to supporting art and culture: for seven years running, the company is sponsor of the International Art Exhibition and the International Architecture Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia, confirming the company's affinity for and proximity to the world of creativity and art and to contemporary languages. Research, innovation, product culture and experimentation are the founding values of the Foscarini philosophy, addressing a multifarious public, through innovative forms and channels, with initiatives linked to interdisciplinary fields. This vision is expressed to the full in the company's presence in Venice, where Foscarini lamps offer a contemporary reinterpretation of the historic venues of la Biennale di Venezia. Light installations with an unmistakable presence and a strong evocative effect, disseminated across the Arsenale and the Giardini, confirm Foscarini's ability to put together sceneries, create atmospheres and arouse emotions even in contexts and settings of significant sizes.

Fiber Evolution: compositions of lamps

Foscarini has always worked on customising space and on the interaction between the designer and the product to underline that industrial production can create infinite possibilities for combinations that play with different shapes and their use in compositions. In order to further underline the collection’s flexibility in meeting the needs of large contract spaces, Foscarini has created Fiber Evolution in 2008, a project-event in partnership with Marc Sadler, which has visited some important European and US design capitals. Compositions of standard models from the Foscarini collection are used to created large light sculptures – truly striking installations that are perfectly flexible and completely organisable according to the environment.

Infinity at Superstudio Più in Milan

It is called Infinity, like that which has no boundaries and thus cannot be contained or come to an end. So that you can experience the intensity of the atmosphere and in order to present the multitude of Foscarini lamps, Infinity creates a giant kaleidoscope, within which there is a succession of unexpected and amazing light choreography, alternated with video and music.The atmosphere of Infinity reflects the Foscarini world endlessly, accompanying the spectator through a theatrical world of multisensory experiences, employing spectacular reflections and effects of light, colour and sound.

INVENTARIO – Everything is a project is born

INVENTARIO does not talk about Foscarini - because we believe in the spirit of a project that is completely free. INVENTARIO represents the values that are part of the company's DNA, taking a free and enlightened look at the design, architecture and art scene. INVENTARIO is an innovative editorial project, created and directed by Beppe Finessi, published by Corraini, promoted and supported by Foscarini and previewed as part of the 12th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice on 26th August 2010.

Foscarini Evolution in Langenthal

Foscarini took part to Designer's Saturday in the location of Création Baumann with the evocative installation “Foscarini Evolution” conceived by Vicente Garcia Jimenez, a macro-scale reinterpretation of Foscarini's Tress lamp. Extremely long red tubular structures were created using more than 100 Tress lamps positioned horizontally within the spaces.

Inside Installation at Superstudio Più in Milan

A project designed by Vicente Garcia Jimenez with video contributions from Massimo Gardone and Fabio Bressan and original music by Francesco Morosini, the installation Inside enchanted visitors by immersing them in a tunnel full of digital and musical special effects. The way the space was structured allowed visitors to enjoy two very different experiences: the first being a more emotional, sensory experience, with the multimedia trail inviting visitors to really grasp the key project aspects of each product. The second experience focused more on rational understanding with a presentation of the new pieces being added to the collection in 2010.

Di Vaso in Fiore

Inspired by the cover of the first issue of the editorial project Inventario – Everything is a Project, which shows a collection of some of the most interesting flower vases in the history of design, there is now an exhibition “Di vaso in fiore. Inventory between nature and design” curated by Beppe Finessi – architect, design critic and editor of the bookzine promoted and supported by Foscarini. The exhibition is another important event for Foscarini, which confirms its support for cultural initiatives centred on creativity and innovation. The exhibition - which was held from April 7 to May 9, 2011 - presented around fifty vases including works by Lorenzo Damiani, Florence Doleac, Marco Ferreri, Freshwest, Alexis Georgacopoulos, Martí Guixé, Massimo Lunardon, Fabio Novembre, Donata Paruccini, Cédric Ragot, Tina Roeder, Adrien Rovero, Denis Santachiara, Robert Stadler, Paolo Ulian, Vedovamazzei and Guido Venturini, as well as some ‘historic’ creations by Angelo Mangiarotti, Enzo Mari, Alessandro Mendini and Ettore Sottsass

Metamorphosis at Superstudio Più

A dark, vibrant, intense atmosphere and a large-scale space where light sculptures stand out like giant totems: this is Metamorphosis, Foscarini’s surprising installation in the spaces of Superstudio Più as part of Fuorisalone 2011. A metamorphosis is a transformation and this concept of change is reinterpreted by Foscarini lamps, which are repeated, rotated, repositioned and multiplied to form monuments of light: a combination of 7 models from the collection and a total of 464 lamps that are deconstructed, reinterpreted and reconstructed in 22 light sculptures, some of which are almost 9 metres in height. The public is surrounded by a magical atmosphere that evokes the emotion of metamorphosis: from an industrially-produced element to a light sculpture with unique visual effects by lighting designer A.J. Weissbard and original music by Francesco Morosini.

Shedding Light. Candles amid art and design

The exhibition Shedding Light. Candles amid art and design, which took place from April 5th to May 21st 2012 at Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan, curated by Beppe Finessi, has been an historical and critical analysis of the candle, a theme of great value and evident charm. An object that seems to belong to the past, in this era of exceptional technological innovation, the candle in fact has never ceased to appeal due to its unique characteristic of shedding light magically through fire. Approximately 50 works were on display, from designer objects (candles and candlesticks) to contemporary artworks, including paintings, sculptures and installations. From the halls of this Milanese Museum, “Fare Lume” became the cover story of the fifth issue of INVENTARIO magazine.

Inspire at Superstudio Più for the Fuorisalone collateral event

The installation Foscarini Inspire curated by Vicente Garcia Jimenez and presented at Superstudio Più, chooses the language of film to tell a poetic and evocative story, which comes to life on 27 big screens. The concept of the cinema is developed and deconstructed in an imaginary journey through the flow of time and space, to be restored reinvented, multiplied and fragmented. Images and sounds are broken up and re-composed to recount the creative idea, sensitivity and intuition that lie behind each Foscarini design. The visitor is totally immersed in a new dimension, with an architecture of screens and a true sound landscape. Spazio Brera opens in Milan and Spazio Soho in New York

The link which Foscarini enjoys with the world of art is part of a wide-ranging vision, which was implemented in 2013 by the opening of both the Foscarini Spazio Brera in Milan and the Foscarini Spazio Soho in New York. These are not just showrooms, but locations which are open to creativity, created to tell stories and to pass on feelings, also thanks to installations signed by artists and exponents of international creativity. Such as Attilio Stocchi, who on the occasion of the opening of the space in Milan created his work SEME/SEED, and Stefano Arienti, who for the space in New York presented an unprecedented environmental installation on a topic so dear to him, i.e. “Algae”.

Around books: from Art to Design

Another everyday object: the book. The exhibition “Around books: from Art to Design” – from 5 April to 6 May 2013 at Museo Poldi Pezzoli – investigated its environs, exploring not the book in itself as a paper product, but the entire universe of design objects and actions gravitating around it: from the bookmark to the bookstand, the bookcase to the reading lamp. The show featured over 100 works, including design objects and furnishings, created by the most outstanding figures of international design. “Intorno al libro”, the exhibition curated by “INVENTARIO”, was coordinated and sponsored by Foscarini. This choice reflects the company’s versatile approach: to create interaction amongst different art forms – design, photography, painting, sculpture – to offer viewers new and unusual experiences.

The Soft House

A seemingly traditional but actually very timely theme: textile design. This was the fulcrum of “The Soft House”, an exhibition curated by Beppe Finessi, from 26 March to 5 May 2014 during Milano Design Week 2014. The exhibition traced a link between past and present, suggesting a relationship between modern and contemporary textile production and the methods and approaches of crafts. “La Casa Morbida” was installed along the entire route through the exhibits of Museo Poldi Pezzoli, often through innovative solutions and unexpected juxtapositions, underscoring the dialogue between the objects of the museum and the spaces of the house. “La Casa Morbida”, the exhibition curated by “INVENTARIO”, was coordinated and sponsored by Foscarini. Twice Light

More than 120 shots for more than 120 meetings under the arch of Twice as Twiggy, between people till then unknown. Born on the occasion of NY Design Week, Twice Light is the Gianluca Vassallo’s photographic project in which Twice as Twiggy the giant version of the icon Twiggy designed by Marc Sadler lamp has a leading role in the public spaces of NY City. Vassallo mounted Twice as Twiggy at public spaces around NYC - Soho, Central Park, Coney Island and Chelsea - and invited those who stopped to observe to take part in his art through a social experiment. He asked them to spend a minute gazing into the eyes of a stranger, a fellow passer-by. The resulting photographs created a collection of snapshots that are intimate and authentic. The photographs showcase the process of overcoming the social norm of distancing oneself from others. They are an assurance that something has changed in those people, even just for a minute, as they let their guards down and let a stranger in.

Ritratti Book

Ritratti was commissioned as a collection of independent expressions on living. Styled by Elisa Ossino and highlighting a diverse selection of lamps from Foscarini's collection, the book takes an intimate tour of five homes across Italy and an outdoor setting, photographed by three interior photographers, Kasia Gatkowska, Andrea Ferrari and Tommaso Sartori.

Anni Luce (Light Years)

1990: the collaboration between Foscarini and the designer Rodolfo Dordoni generates Lumiere: a lampshade in blown glass paired with an aluminium tripod, in an innovative reinterpretation of the classic abat-jour typology. Foscarini decided to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this product-icon by looking back on the years of its life. Fast years of major transformations, during which the world has changed. A video installation projects images on 26 different screens, simultaneously: an “inventory” of facts and personalities, trials and hopes, technological and creative revolutions, changes of style and lifestyle. And, of course, of design milestones: forming a grand visual phantasmagoria, a flux of events and changes that have made our history from 1990 to 2015. “Anni Luce” took place in the spaces of the Triennale di Milano from 2 to 30 April 2016, curated by Michele Calzavara and Elisa Ossino.

Best Stand at Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair

In February 2016 Foscarini make its debut presence at the most important exhibition dedicated to Scandinavian design, the Stockholm Furniture Fair. The company chose a strong and impactful presence inside the fair to communicate the brand personality and the collection’s character: a wide range of colours, materials, shapes, styles and designers. Ferruccio Laviani designed an extremely evocative project: an enveloping tunnel structure that hosts the eclectic Foscarini universe. With this project Foscarini wins the Editors' Choice Awards for the Best Stand.

Reality or Illusion at Spazio Brera and Spazio Soho

An installation that challenges the mind and begs the question: what is reality and what is illusion? Visitors enter a graphic world, resembling an Ames room that gives the sensation of suddenly growing and shrinking proportions. The daring effect challenges perspectives, and is created by a multicolored pattern displayed across surfaces. This technique results in the sizes of objects and people seeming larger or smaller than they are in reality. Against this background illusion, the giant versions of Foscarini icons loom over the setting and underline the sense of wonder. The installation is a way for visitors to personally experience and discover the “extra-large” versions of some of Foscarini’s well-known lamps, such as Big Bang L and XL, Spokes Large and Twice as Twiggy.

Quasi Segreti (Almost Secrets). Cassetti tra Arte e Design (Drawers amid art and design)

The exhibition, held at the museum house from March 16th to April 25th, 2016, focused on the contemporary world of drawers, evidently functional elements capable of containing, organizing, and concealing, but, as curator Beppe Finessi states, "precisely because of these functional characteristics, also capable of suggesting visions, evoking memories, and suggestions." Young designers as well as the great masters of design have revisited and interpreted this domestic presence so firmly established in our tradition of living.

Fare Luce (Shedding Light): a book, an installation, a film

FARE LUCE (SHEDDING LIGHT) is the guiding theme for Foscarini at the 2017 Milano Design Week with a poetic installation dedicated to celebrating light, curated by Giovanni Maria Filindeu - a book dedicated to light, curated by Beppe Finessi and a film conceived and produced by Gianluca Vassallo. The installation designed by the architect Filindeu is a celebration of light, of emotions, of memories, of experiences, coined and nurtured by the manifestation of light. Fare Luce is also the title of a book which investigates the topic of light, with contributions ranging from architecture, to design, art, graphics, photography and illustration. Fare Luce are also fourteen short films that tell various tales: simple stories, everyday tales, which all share the topic of FARE LUCE (SHEDDING LIGHT).

Reverse Room

Nasce il progetto VITE

VITE is a fascinating publishing initiative with which Foscarini talks about light, starting not with the company’s lamps – the people who design, develop and produce them – but with the individuals who live in the spaces brightened by those lamps. Presented in 2020 and selected for the ADI Design Index 2021, VITE (LIVES) is a voyage that takes us to cities in the North, South, East and West, inside real lives of real people – guided by artist, photographer and videomaker Gianluca Vassallo and writer Flavio Soriga. In the photo and video series, people are at the centre of the visuals and the narration, allowing viewers the freedom to roam vicariously inside personal spaces, real spaces that are approachable and imperfect. This time, Foscarini no longer looks at carefully controlled environments, "aspirational" images of photographic sets, but rather at homes that are lived in on an everyday basis, and close-ups of the people who dwell in them.

In the project Battiti, presented in an exhibition at Fuori Salone 2022, light is used not to illuminate but to construct. As if it were a material: it generates effects, underlines forms and invents shadows. A project of pure experimentation on light, undertaken by Foscarini in collaboration with Andrea Anastasio and Davide Servadei of Ceramica Gatti 1928.
