A contemporary suspension lamp in which the formal vocabulary of the chandelier is reduced to its essentials, in pursuit of a synthesis of function and décor. Composed of curved extruded aluminium arms arranged dynamically with built-in LEDs, its presence is generated by the playful combination of parts and finishes.

After the project of the luminator floor lamp Chiaroscura, the Medas are back with Foscarini to bring new vitality to another lighting classic: the chandelier. Their project comes from the intention of rethinking the traditional chandelier, starting from the possibilities offered by contemporary light sources and the desire to incorporate the light into the structure, eliminating visible wiring to generate essential, dynamic lines.

Asteria arises from technology but conceals it, absorbing it in the structure itself. The focus is a language of minimal forms, rendered warm and elegant by the sophisticated quality of the emitted light, the curvature and dynamic arrangement of the arms, which grant the design a harmonious image, free of any aesthetic rigidity. The central feature of the project – and in some ways the most surprising – is the arm: extruded aluminium, curved, with a built-in LED strip that functions as the light source. The light emitted is perceptible from above but also from the sides in a subtle way like a line floating in space. Another light source directly drives the light downward, for more functional lighting.

Asteria comes in different aesthetic and functional configurations, supplied by Foscarini as prepared sets to ensure coherent design and compositional harmony: besides the Multi version, composed of three different levels, the lamp also comes in a version with one level in three different sizes.

“We began by asking ourselves where the technology would take us: LEDs, in fact, offer new opportunities that enable us to work on the quality of the light and its distribution. Within the typology of a large, central overhead lamp, we wondered what might be the most essential form the LEDs would allow us to obtain. The outcome is the idea of the arm made with an LED strip, which became the starting point of the design.”
