Borders, families, travels
We bought this house eight years ago, just the opposite of what I dreamed about. When I crossed the threshold I fell in love instantly. Somehow that too was crossing a border: to trust, to discover.
My life is made of borders.
I was born in Minsk, Belarus, and my father still lives there; I studied in Moscow; then I came to Germany for work, where I met my husband who is a lawyer. We are married, with one daughter. Around us there are many paintings, purchased on our travels; many come from Minsk, and remind me of my childhood. We also have many family photos, in silver frames, as was a custom in the past: my parents, my husband’s parents, his first son with his wife and the grandson, our daughter, our first terrier, sadly no longer with us. We bought this house eight years ago, just the opposite of what I dreamed about: I wanted something old, Jugendstil, but my husband insisted that we should at least go and have a look. When I crossed the threshold I fell in love instantly. Somehow that too was crossing a border: to trust, to discover.
